The Knight, the Rule-Breaker
Players meet the knight, the only piece that can jump over others, and learn its unusual L-shaped move through demonstration and a hands-on capturing puzzle.
Open with a hook. Yesterday you drilled "no piece can jump over another." Today, one piece breaks that rule.
Yesterday I told you that pieces cannot jump over each other. Today you meet the one exception in all of chess. The knight, the horse, is the only piece that can leap right over other pieces. It is also the weirdest mover on the board, so we are going to practice it a lot.
- The knight moves in an L-shape: two squares in one direction, then one square at a right angle. Two and then one.
- It is the only piece that can jump over other pieces, its own or the opponent's. Whatever is in between does not matter.
- It captures only the piece sitting on the square where it lands, not the pieces it jumped over.
- From the middle of the board a knight can reach up to eight different squares. From a corner, only two.
The knight is genuinely confusing at first, for children and adults. Do not rush. Demonstrate the L over and over. A reliable way to say it: "Two squares one way, then one square to the side." Have every student trace an L with their finger on the board a few times before they try it in a game.
A trick that helps: from where the knight stands, it always lands on a square of the opposite color. If it is on a light square, it moves to a dark one, always. If a student's knight lands on the same color it started, the move was wrong. This is a fast self-check you can teach them.
This is the signature activity for the knight, and it works beautifully. Set up each board exactly like this:
- Place a single knight on e6.
- Place eight pawns on these squares: c7, d5, c3, e2, f4, h5, g7, and e8.
The challenge: capture all eight pawns in exactly eight knight moves. Each move must be a legal L-shape, and each move lands on the next pawn. The squares are arranged so that every capture leads straight into the next one, with no wasted moves.
- c7 → d5 → c3 → e2 → f4 → h5 → g7 → e8
To be clear about what this is: the pawns never move, so this is not a legal game of chess. It is a movement demonstration, built so the knight can capture back to back and students see the L-shape eight times in a row. If a sharp student points out that the pawns should get a turn, tell them they are exactly right, and that is why this is a puzzle rather than a game.
How to run it
Let pairs work it out together on their board. The knight hops from pawn to pawn, and each hop should be a clean "two and one" L. As students find the path, have them show you the L for each move, narrating "two up, one over." That narration is the real learning: it forces them to see the shape every time.
If a pair is stuck, do not give the answer. Ask, "Where can your knight legally land from here?" and let them test squares. The struggle is the point.

If time allows, add knights to the pawn-and-bishop game from last session and play a few minutes. Then gather and ask, "What makes the knight different from every other piece?" (It jumps; it moves in an L.)
Add the knight's value to your growing list: a knight is worth 3, the same as a bishop. Both are called "minor pieces."
